Father and Son(s)

One thing I really appreciate about my husband is his heart to disciple and build relationship with his own sons. He realizes that these boys are going to grow up to be men, and the best thing he can do is to keep them as much as possible by his side to work and play. These boys are learning from their daddy what it means to be a hard-working and loving family man, not from the TV (where men are often portrayed as buffoons), and certainly not from their peers (blind leading the blind there!).

Here you can see both my husband and oldest son (9) working together to produce his podcast, Spinal Column Radio. My son feels so important, so valued that his daddy wants him to be there.

I know this is a hard thing for a lot of people, our family included. Men of today were just not brought up day after day under their own father's wings, and their fathers were not discipled by their fathers either. At some point, however, some man during some generation will need to put the brakes on the statist idea that children don't need their parents. My husband decided that he would be the one. So he brings his son alongside, stumbles a bit, and tries again. My son is learning a lot about work, about grace. He is learning, also, how to be a father to our grandchildren.

And I, as a wife and mother, am learning to keep the whole matter in prayer! I cannot *push* my husband to do such things. But God is faithful to turn his heart as I trust His ways.

My 3 year old son is already close to his daddy's side as well. He has great dreams of doing a "monkey podcast". And knowing Tom, the website and plans are probably already in the works.

May the Lord bless the men in your life!

I love watching our boys follow, admire, and imitate their daddy. Thanks for the reminder to be faithful to keep their relationship in my prayers!
